Questions: Along the lines of whether a relationship or
“communion” with others would result in the destruction of your
personality and individuality, let me ask this: Is any man an island,
entire unto himself? Or have you received things – including
ideas and concepts – that have been handed on to you by others?
Do such things help or hinder you in the journey of your
life? Do I believe that there might be persons outside of
me who can be sources of wisdom? Who do I treat as authorities in my
life?
What can I believe and why? Can I believe in what others testify
to? If so, what can I believe? On what basis would I
believe or refuse to believe? On what basis would it be
appropriate to accept someone else’s counsel of wisdom? Or must I
always reject it?
