Walker Percy, Lost in the Cosmos

Questions to Guide Your Reading:

1. According to Walker Percy, what is paradoxical about our knowledge about Jupiter and Saturn as opposed to our knowledge about ourselves?

2. In question #5 of Percy's short quiz, which view of sexuality would you say you agree with?

3. In question #6 of Percy's short quiz, which of the selves, if any, do you identify with?

4. In Question 1 of his "Multiple-Choice Self-Help Quiz," Percy lays out a thought experiment that involves waking up one day with total amnesia.  Does this prospect intrigue you?  If so, what does this say about your non-amnesiac self?

5. Read the chapter entitled "The Self as Nought (II)."  Why are men and women subject to fashion?

6. See Question 4 on "The Fearful Self."  Why are people so afraid of speaking to an audience?

7. What message do you think Walker Percy is trying to get the reader to discover by guiding him or her through all these thought experiments?
